CEDC Statement on Short Term Rentals in Columbia, PA

The Columbia Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) exists to work as a bridge between business, government and the community. We actively promote community development and encourage business investment within the borough of Columbia.

Recently, the rise of Short Term Rentals (STRs) as places for guests, tourists, and visitors to lodge has caused small and large municipalities to grapple with the pros and cons of allowing such establishments in an effort to promote local and regional tourism. Plenty of research has been conducted on the benefits and drawbacks of STRs to local housing, tourism, businesses, and neighborhoods and is available online. The results generally show that there can be significant benefits, and that the potential negative impacts can be avoided by wise planning, placement, and implementation.

We are grateful for the work both the Borough of Columbia’s planning commission board and zoning hearing board have done helping our town move wisely forward - and are excited for the future benefits to our community and merchants through wise STR initiatives.

In keeping with our mission and purpose, it is the general position of the CEDC to support the establishment of STRs in the downtown commercial district as a proven means of increasing tourism, visitors, commerce to retailers and restaurants, as well as increasing investment in our community.

It would be our desire to see the downtown commercial district to be opened to short term rentals so long as:

  • STRs are owned or managed by local hosts or businesses so as to ensure hosts were readily available to their guests and are invested in our community

  • STR hosts provide information to their guests via printed or digital materials promoting Columbia businesses, events, and outdoor spaces for them to patron and enjoy

  • STRs report annually to the borough on the number of guests hosted to celebrate success

  • Overall number of STRs are limited based on research to enable us to preserve our local culture and influence

The downtown commercial district is uniquely positioned to allow guests of STRs to walk to local businesses, appreciate our outdoor destinations, and attend local events.

Columbia continues to set an example for growth and progress, and we believe the growth of places for tourists, visitors, and families to gather in Columbia will continue our help our community.
